In 1939, the Soviet Union and Germany have signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact and secret additional protocol: The protocol presumed an inclusion of Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Eastern Poland and Bessarabia in the USSR’s area of involvement. In 1940, the governments of Latvia and neighboring Baltic republics were forced to live with the ultimatum: to form a pro-Soviet government and allowing extra military units of the Red Army on the territory of Latvia.

Latvian people, in fact, got captured by Soviet power. So, Latvians have formed a secret partisan force, called "Forest Brothers". The movie is grounded on the testimonies of those eyewitnesses, who have experienced related stories. All the names of the characters, as well as biographies of some characters are fictional.
